For the first time since the scheme began, the domestic solar grant has not been cut. Here is what that means if you are weighing up a system this year.
The SEAI grant for domestic rooftop solar stays at €1,800 for 2026. That was confirmed in November 2025, and it is the first year since the Microgeneration Support Scheme opened that the figure has not fallen.
Why this is a change
The grant has been reduced every year since it began. It was €2,400 in 2023, €2,100 in 2024, and €1,800 in 2025. The pattern led most people in the industry to expect another cut. It did not come.
The reasoning is straightforward enough: the grant is designed to taper as installation costs fall and the technology becomes mainstream. Holding it suggests the view is that domestic solar is not yet at the point where support can be withdrawn.
What you actually receive
€1,800 is the maximum, not a flat payment. The grant is pro-rata by system size, so a smaller system draws proportionally less — a 2.5kWp installation is worth about €1,500.
It covers the panels and their installation. It does not cover batteries, immersion diverters or other add-ons, which is worth knowing before you compare quotes: a quote that includes a battery is not directly comparable to one that does not.
The other saving people forget
The 0% VAT rate on supply and installation of domestic solar continues in 2026. On a typical system that is worth considerably more than most people assume, and it applies automatically — there is nothing to claim.
Should you wait?
Nobody can tell you what happens in 2027, and we would not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that the grant has never gone up, and every year you wait is a year of bills you have already paid. If a system makes sense for your roof and your usage now, waiting for a better grant is a bet against the entire history of the scheme.
